Open any dating app and look at what it is built to do. Find who is nearby. Find who is free. Find who could meet on Thursday. Distance is a slider you drag until the results thin out, and proximity is the whole idea.
That works beautifully if you live in a city full of people who share your language, your food, your parents' expectations and your idea of what a life together looks like.
It works very badly if there are four hundred people like you within a hundred miles, and the person you would actually build a life with is in another state, or another country, or one long flight and one difficult conversation away.
The problem was never that the old way lacked technology. It is that it only reached as far as one family's address book.
Because here is what people in our community are actually doing, and have always done. They are not swiping. They are asking an aunt. They are being introduced at a wedding. They are on a family thread where somebody's cousin knows somebody's cousin, and a photograph arrives with a paragraph of context attached to it.
That older system is not embarrassing and it is not obsolete. It works because it carries context: who the family is, what the person is like when nobody is performing, whether this is serious. It only fails at one thing, and it fails at it completely. It cannot reach across an ocean.
So Serendib is built for people looking for one person, not for options. That single decision changes almost everything else.
Intentions are said out loud, at the start. Marriage, or company, or seeing what happens. All three are respectable. Only one of them should be a surprise a year in.
Distance is expected, not penalised. A match across two time zones is a normal match here. It is not an edge case we tolerate. It is the reason the thing exists.
Context is asked once, and gently. Language at home. Faith. Family. How much of each you want in your daily life, with room to say not much. We do not ask for height or income, because those turn people into a sortable list.
It stays quiet. No streaks. No scores. Nothing engineered to keep you scrolling at midnight. You are looking for a person, not building a habit.
Serendib opens on 14 September 2026, and until then it is a waiting list. That is deliberate. A community app with ten members is not a small version of a good product, it is a bad first week for the ten people brave enough to be first. So we open once, with enough people in enough places that the first week is worth showing up for.
Two last things, said plainly so they can be held against us. We will not tell you how many people are already on the list, because that number is easy to inflate and impossible for you to check. And we will not sell your details, to anyone, ever.
We would rather open smaller and be worth trusting.
